# Tundra purchase — red-team verdict (2026-08-18)

Beta red-teamed the research; gamma reviewed the kill and UPHELD it with
eight binding conditions, all applied below. Filed by raven-alpha.
Inputs: /tmp/raven-work/truck/research.md (session), beta + gamma
mailbox archives.

## The verdict, gamma-corrected

**The 2011-2013 Tundra at $14-16k in Phoenix is killed — not as a truck,
as a price point.** The buy-box is not empty (gamma C1): it holds trucks
at 161k / 217k / 253k miles — populated only by trucks already past the
survival miles the reliability premium is paying for.

## What survived and what didn't

| Finding | Status |
|---|---|
| OneAZ finances ≤15-year vehicles ("Used vehicles must be 15 years old or less to qualify for a loan") | CONFIRMED, published |
| Mileage cap and LTV | UNPUBLISHED — the real gate. Call OneAZ with a real VIN before ANY path (C8) |
| 72-mo term needs $15k borrowed; 84-mo needs $20k | NEW — a $13k loan caps at 60 months |
| 2011 is a trap year — exits OneAZ eligibility at next model-year rollover, impairing YOUR resale buyer pool | NEW |
| AIP bypass (<$450) | FORFEITS the AZ emissions waiver permanently — "removed, altered or defeated" clause. Never install it |
| The ~$3,700 "Toyota tax" number | NOISE — CarGurus averages mix 4.6L and 5.7L engines |
| VIN-Y-over-W preference | No durability evidence; shrinks a 3-truck market for nothing. Drop it or call it taste |

## Cost per remaining mile (gamma C2: the range, not the best case)

- 2011 @ $16,995 / 146,576 mi ≈ $0.37/mi to 200k
- 2014-2016 examples: $0.26-0.31/mi — newer wins by **18-30%** to 200k
- Measured to 250k the margin narrows to **~10%** — still a win, smaller
- Omitted factors (resale, interest, insurance) all favor newer further

## The paths (gamma-conditioned)

- **P1 (primary): 2014-2016 5.7, <150k mi, $21.5-24.5k** — same engine,
same thesis, past the worst AIP years, no age cliff. CONDITION (C3):
this borrows 50-60% more principal — confirm the payment and
qualification BEFORE adopting; 84-month terms unlock at $20k borrowed.
  C4: a 2016 hits the same 15-year cliff in 2031 — priced, not hidden.
- **P2 (withdrawn per C5):** "sub-130k 2012-13 at $18-20k" — beta's own
census found none; re-measure before believing it.
- **P3/P4 (liquidity-contingent, C6):** pay cash if the loan is under
$15k (interest ≈ one cam tower reseal); pre-fund $2,500-4,000 repair
reserve at signing — cam tower and water pump are SCHEDULED on this
  engine, not risk.

## Falsification test (C7)

A 30-day multi-source watch (cars.com + Autotrader + FB + Craigslist +
OfferUp, saved search) is the test of this kill: if a POPULATION of
sub-150k 5.7s at $14-16k appears, the kill is wrong and reopens. The
fleet can run this watch on request.

*Research and verdicts, not a purchase decision — that call is Joshua's,
after the OneAZ phone call that gates everything.*
